Elliston and Australian Fishing Championships update
Week seven had a mystery weight of 1.675 kg with the winning salmon weighed in at 1.660 kg. It was a tie between Mat Kerley and Rob Horton; fish were caught at Locks Well and Sheringa. The weekly cash prize of $200 was donated by the Elliston Hotel.
Now for what was biting and where
Elliston
The jetty at Elliston is providing steady action with Garfish and BIG Squid during the afternoon and Tommies through out the night. Talia is producing Salmon Trout to 1 kg
Lock’s Well
Locks Well has plenty of Salmon in the 1.5 to 2.0kg range
Sheringa
Sheringa is the standout this week when it comes to salmon. Anglers are bringing in plenty of fish in the 3.0 kg range which means some great light tackle action. Tommies and Salmon trout are being caught in good numbers from the Salmon Beach with a few large Flathead turning up as well.
Almonta/Gunyah Beach
Gunyah was easily accessible this week with firm sand on the tracks and the beach. The fish were not plentiful but those caught were big. Anglers who moved up and down the beach working the gutters were rewarded with fish up to 4.5 kg.
Farm Beach
Anglers reported patchy fishing for KG Whiting. Boaties were bagging out but had to work a lot of sand patches to do so.
Port Lincoln
Salmon fishing has been rewarding along the South Coast with fish coming from the Salmon Hole, Wiseman’s and Miller’s Hole. Whiting fishing has been quiet during the day but several boats launching after work are picking up good numbers quickly in the evenings; best places are the southern side of Proper Bay, around Murrays Point and below the Monument. Whiting are still being caught at Taylors and the Lumps and further south around Williams nannygai, morwong and a few snapper. Small tommies are being caught around the bay at Louth . Moonlight bay has plenty of Squid with the jetty producing squid in the evenings. A few snook can be found around Rabbit Island. Over at Louth Island the South reef has good size KG Whiting later in the day.
Tumby Bay
The jetty at Tumby has been producing Squid and whiting with Salmon trout around Second Creek. The Group has Whiting in patches. Most inshore areas were quiet last week due to the bloodworm run, this should improve from now on.
Port Neill
There are salmon being caught from both beaches and rocks south of the town. Mullet are also on most local beaches but yellow fin are quiet. Boat anglers have been happy with fat winter whiting and the wreck is holding some nice snapper; snapper are also coming from around the Dog Fence grounds. The jetty and breakwater are still pretty reliable for tommies and squid.
Arno Bay
Whiting are consistent north and south and in the bay. A few legal size snapper came from the inshore reefs in between many undersize fish.
Port Lincoln Anglers Club
The Port Lincoln Anglers Club travelled to Sheringa for their weekend competition. The day was enjoyable but the fishing difficult due to a big swell and rip.
