Fishing Report 22 February 2012

Another two keen young anglers are pictured this week, they are brothers Tristan age 11 and Callum age 9. Both lads are shown holding up fat salmon they caught at Gunyah Beach last weekend. Both were also happy advising that they out fished mum and dad this time.

This season is still proving good for blue morwong with better than normal catches coming from the usual grounds in the passage and out from Point Sir Isaac’s. Tom Alister is shown holding an excellent example of this fine eating fish. This was caught out wide of Sir Isaac’s. Also getting amongst some prime eating fish is Terry Cameron who was very happy with this nanny he caught on his new rod and reel. Last week’s report about the local anglers Club had a mention of a dusky morwong being the biggest fish for the day. Here is the proof with the successful angler Phil Norsworthy who landed the 8 kilo specimen in some pretty rough terrain on his whiting gear.

Now for what was biting and where

Elliston

Whiting fishing was good in Anxious Bay with fish around 40cm landed, and a surprising number of nannygai were caught while chasing the whiting. Gar, tommies and squid were the main targets off the jetty and some whiting came from the beaches.

Lock’s Well

Earlier in the week three schools of salmon came in close creating frantic fishing for several hours. Salmon up to 3 kg were hitting bare hooks they were that fired up.

Sheringa

First Beach fished well with salmon around 3kg, just legal whiting, the odd flathead and plenty of mullet. Salmon were also caught off the surf beach.

Almonta/Gunyah Beach

Good size and numbers of salmon were caught over the weekend; the average size was between 3 ½ and 4 ½ kg. Gunyah held the most fish with several schools very close to the beach; some anglers found weed was causing problems at the Golden Island end.

Farm Beach

Whiting catches were reported from deep-water grounds out from Frenchmans and along the Sandhills. Some garfish, tommies and squid were in closer to shore.

Coffin Bay

Tuna around 10 to 20kg were in good numbers around the Hummocks on the weekend. A few tuna were around Rocky with fish hooked by trolling along the edges of slimy mack schools, and some kingies up to 15kg were caught on jigs and live bait. Greenly Island had trevally up to 55cm. In the bay a few whiting were landed in between undersize ones, salmon trout, tommies and gar were found as well. Rumours of some good size snapper have filtered in but locations have been kept quiet.

Port Lincoln

Trevally around 25 to 30cm came from Grantham Island and the shipyards. Big garfish have been from Stenross boat ramp to Point Boston along with a few whiting. Trumpeters were a curse in the bay, moving in even without the use of berley. Yellowfin whiting were caught from North Shields and some undersize ones came from the town jetty. The main wharf was slow with just a few small salmon trout and tommies.

Louth Bay was hit or miss with whiting but some big garfish were around. Garfish were also found from Louth up to Bolingbroke when conditions allowed. Around the Tulka area was ok for a feed of whiting and some squid. Further offshore, tuna came from North and South Neptune’s, the Cabbage Patch and south of Williams Island.

Tumby Bay

Big whiting came from the southern end of the Group, along with tommies and squid. The Tumby foreshore had some yellowfin whiting, and from the jetty some tommies and squid. Second Creek was good for salmon trout, some gar and yellowfin.

Port Neill

Whiting were ok on grounds north and south. Yellowfin whiting came from the beaches, and tommies and squid from the jetty and breakwater.
