Craig’s Fishing Report 28July 2010.
Those fishing offshore have just enjoyed a full week of fabulous fishing in near perfect conditions. It looks like we will be land based for the next week though, with gale force winds and seas up to 7 metres forecast.
There are still plenty of Tuna out off Port Mac in as shallow as 15mtrs right out to the shelf. Average size was up over the weekend with some fish nudging 20kg. Ron Fox played a big fish for 1 1/2 hours Sunday arvo before breaking it off late in the day.
Bottom bouncing from 60 mtrs out to 100 mtrs has been exceptional. Gummy Shark and School Shark numbers have improved out of sight over the last year or two and the last several days have been no exception also. Wayne and Daniel Carter fished south west of Port Mac last Sunday out in 100mtrs of water for a mixed bag of Gummy Shark, Queen Snapper and Teraki.
Cameron Vonduve and Wade Sullivan fished the 60 mtr line straight out off Port Mac Monday morning for a 27 kg Gummy Shark and a 12kg School Shark. Not all of the action has been out wide either! Kim Vaughan and Craig Martinella fished the Kelp Beds off Danger Point Saturday morning for 7 Gummy Shark to 36 pounds, releasing 3 and keeping 4 for the table.
I thought the seas may have been too flat for the Cape Banks Salmon to cooperate but alas, I was wrong. Red Rock bay fished extremely well for both boat and surf fisho's with plently of fish to 3kg. Canunda also fished well and the Beachport Salmon Hole had good numbers but the average size was down around the kilo mark.
Glenelg River looks like one of few fishing options this weekend due to the weather but that is not a bad thing. As hoped, the estuary is just starting to produce a few Mulloway. I know of at least 4 fish to17lb taken on live Mullet this week and a couple of big fish lost. It was around this time last year we started to see fish to 30lb taken on Vibes, bounced between the Poles and Popes Nose.
Further up the river between Simpsons and Donovans, quite a few Mulloway have been caught on Lures such as Jointed Rebels and Galaxia Minnows and the most successful Bream and estuary Perch lures have been 3" Gulp Minnows. Strike Pro 40mm Vibes in Gold and Brown are also working well in deeper sections.
Have a safe weekend and I'll catch you next week!
